FAQ
IF THE QUINTA IS PRIVATE PROPERTY, HOW CAN IT BECOME A PUBLIC PARK?
When there’s a recognised public interest, private land can be expropriated — just like when roads, bridges, or public infrastructure are built. The owner is fairly compensated, either through other land or financial payment. That’s exactly how the Nova SBE site in Carcavelos was acquired.
Even the famous coastal road (“Marginal”) was built through expropriation in the 1940s.
I WANT TO HELP BUT DON’T WANT TO BE PART OF THE LEGAL CASE. CAN I STILL CONTRIBUTE?
Absolutely. You don’t have to be a formal claimant. You can simply donate towards legal costs — any amount helps
and has real impact.
IS THIS THE FIRST LEGAL CHALLENGE AGAINST THE PROJECT?
No. In June 2024, the group SOS Quinta dos Ingleses filed an injunction and lawsuit that temporarily stopped construction. However, in December 2024, the judge allowed the works to continue. After the appeal was controversially rejected in June 2025, the developer Alves Ribeiro moved fast — cutting down hundreds of trees and destroying large areas of the Quinta.
SO WHY START A NEW CASE NOW?
This is a new opportunity to make a difference and stop the destruction once and for all.
SO WHY “66”?
The fight to save Quinta dos Ingleses began 66 years ago, in 1959, when Savelos Real Estate Company was established, with the purpose to sell and develop in the Quinta land. St. Julian´s School acquires the palace building. The name symbolises 66 years of resistance — and the determination to preserve this natural space for everyone.
