This legal action has one goal: To protect, restore and return Quinta dos Ingleses to the community.

At a time of climate crisis, we refuse to accept the plan to build 850 luxury flats, a hotel, and commercial blocks — buildings with up to five underground levels and maximum eight storeys above ground — on this precious green land.

The nearby St. Julian’s School community is already suffering from the noise, dust and stress caused by construction. Both children and staff are being affected every day.

We underline the fact that 66 pela Quinta is not against plans to build and expand the school campus, in order to accommodate its present needs. We believe that it is in the interest of the school to be surrounded by parkland instead of high rise buildings.

Beyond its natural value, the Quinta has a rich cultural and historical heritage — it’s a Pombaline-era estate, once linked to Carcavelos wine, the Peninsular War, the first ever football match in Portugal, and the dawn of global telecommunications.

It was here that the first undersea telegraph cables were laid, connecting Carcavelos to Cornwall (Porthcurno) and then the rest of the world. Porthcurno has a museum celebrating this history — as will the Azores soon.

So why not celebrate it here, where it all began?

Why Save the Quinta dos Ingleses?

To restore the local ecosystem — the trees, plants and wildlife that make this space unique — and to help tackle climate change by reducing flooding, heatwaves, and coastal erosion.

To protect Carcavelos from overdevelopment, overcrowding, and the chaos of endless traffic, hotels and shopping complexes.

To give the land back to the people and create a beautiful urban natural park extending from Carcavelos Beach.

Here’s what we’re fighting for:

To protect the quality of Carcavelos Beach and its world-class surf conditions.

To leave a living, breathing legacy for the generations to come.
